Our Vines – Our Vineyards Shape Our Wines

-
Choosing Varieties that suit the Unique Hilltops Region
Chardonnay, Viognier, Riessling, Fiano, Vermentino, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Grenache, Tempranillo, Touriga National, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon.

-
Ancient Rich Soils, Unique Microclimate
The Hilltops’ unique terroir is the key to our high-quality grapes. Deep, free draining decomposed granite soils, topped with rich red topsoil blown in from Central Australia over millennia, combine with a distinct cool climate – cold winters, dry summers with warm days and cool nights – to create perfect conditions for ripening.

-
First Planted in 1997 across diverse Hilltops locations
Planted in the 1990’s, our two vineyard sites in the Hilltops region utilise the diverse soil compositions and altitudes to grow low yielding, premium grapes that express the characteristics of this amazing region. Soil type, altitude and microclimate are all carefully considered when selecting the varieties we grow.
Our Wines - A Minimal Intervention Approach. A Pure Expression Of The Grapes
Ballinaclash Wines are small batch, single vineyard wines crafted by French winemaker Chris Derez. Since our first vintage in 2005 we have partnered with Chris to create some truly exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir and vintage of each season. With over 30 years of wine making experience Chris knows when to intervene and when to stand back and let the grapes do their thing.

“Ballinaclash is proudly owned and operated by the Mullany family. They are among the
most innovative, hard-working and visionary families in the country, the very backbone of
our farming community. No opportunity goes untested. While stone fruit and cherries have
been grown since 1965, 2nd generation Cath and Peter Mullany planted wine grapes in 1997.
These traditional and new wave varieties now form an integral cog in the Ballinaclash plan.
Multiple wine awards attest to the quality of these cool-climate Hilltops Region wines. Visit
the rustic farm-gate and cellar door soon to taste and buy these delightful wines and the
plethora of Ballinaclash stone fruit and cherry products.”
